Sharon Lee (Brake) Shippy, a longtime resident of Caney, Kan., died on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, surrounded by her family after a long illness. Sharon was born on March 27, 1937, in El Dorado, Kan., to her parents, Clifford and Beverly (Blue) Brake. She then attended school in Wayside, Kan., graduating in 1955, followed by training at Bartlesville Business School. Early in life, Sharon met her one love, Raymond Lee “Butch” Shippy, and they were married on Nov. 11, 1955. After their marriage they welcomed three children, Sydney, Dale, and Victoria. Sharon worked several jobs throughout her life including employment at Kopco, McDaniels Meat Locker, as a tax assistant for clients, and completed her career in logistics at Western Publishing, where she retired. She was well-known for her beautiful gardens and well-kept home. Time spent with her family and grandchildren was most important, and they also learned those same farming and gardening values from her. She loved to fish, stayed involved in community organizations, and enjoyed time with the different animals she had throughout her life. She was actively involved in the Caney Garden Club and Caney Saddle Club. She and Butch were members of the First Christian Church in Caney and she had recently been attending Fellowship Regional Church in Caney. Left to honor her memory are her children, Sydney Theiss of Tulsa, Dale and Janice Shippy of Bartlesville, Okla.; her seven grandchildren, Shelly and Wade Reh of Clay Center, Kan, Wesley and Ashley Theiss of Havana, Kan., Michael and Jordy Theiss of rural Caney, Amber and Brad Thornton of Peru, Kan., Jerrid and Lauren Thompson of Niotaze, Kan., Sara and Logan Diveley of Bartlesville, Okla., Glynna and Elijah Hershey of rural Coffeyville, Kan.; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Linda Clark of Independence, Kan., Terry and Connie Brake of rural Caney, and Phena Guidry of Lake Charles, La. Sharon was preceded in death by her daughter, Victoria, her husband, Butch, her parents, and a half-brother, “Chip” Brake. Graveside services will be held on Monday January 24, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney, with Jeff Wyrick of Fellowship Regional Church officiating. The family requests that donations should be made to the Caney Garden Club or AWOL in Independence.
