Kenneth Harwell

September 11, 1921 - June 23, 2016

Graveside services for Kenneth E. Harwell, 94 of Skiatook, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Clinton City Cemetery in Clinton, Oklahoma.                                     Interment is under the direction of Peters-Stumpff Funeral Home.                          Kenneth passed away on June 23, 2016, in Owasso, Oklahoma.  He was born on September 11, 1921 in Bell Springs, Texas to Samuel Franklin and Hettie Mae (King) Harwell.   He attended the Waco, Texas public schools and graduated from Waco High School in 1941.  He completed the B.S. degree in chemistry at Baylor University in 1945.  He attended the University of Texas in Austin where he earned the M.A. degree in Chemistry and Physics in 1947 and the Ph.D. degree in organic and physical chemistry in 1951.  He married Joye Murphy in 1961, she also was a chemist.              Kenneth has held positions of Assistant Professor and Associate Member of the Graduate Faculty of Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas.  He was employed as a Research Chemist or Senior Research Chemist by the following industrial corporations: Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation, Celanese Corporation of America, Jefferson Chemical Company, Continental Oil Company, Gulf Research and Development Corporation and the Cook Paint and Varnish Company.             Dr. Harwell has owned and operated two businesses: Texas Fine Chemicals Company in Austin, Texas and the Merriam Chemical Development Company in Edwardsville, Kansas.              Kenneth is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the National Rifle Association, and a sixty plus year's member of the American Chemical Society.  He has also been a member of Phi Lambda Upsilon honorary Chemical society and the Society of Plastics Engineers.             He published sixteen research papers and patents in the fields of chemistry, plastics and scientific instruments: and one book, "The Reign of Natural Law" Vantage Press, New York 1998.             Dr. Harwell is listed in "Who's Who in Science and Engineering" 5th Edition; "Who's Who in America"; "American Men and Women of Science" and "Who's Who in the South and Southwest".               Kenneth is survived by his wife Joye of the home.             He was preceded in death by his parents.
