Andrew Leroy Gray, III, loving husband, dad, granddad and friend, passed away on March 1, 2012 after a short illness. Leroy was born March 3, 1924 in Wagoner, Oklahoma to Andrew Leroy Gray, Jr. and Eula Burns Gray. Leroy grew up in Wagoner and graduated from Wagoner High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII in the Pacific Theater with Company C, 533rd Engineer Boat & Shore Regiment. His decorations included the Bronze Star for Valor. On November 24, 1946 he married Kathryn Lucille (Sparky) Lee. Leroy worked for various lumber companies in Stilwell, Muskogee and Vinita, Oklahoma before moving to Bartlesville to work for Baughman Lumber and Concrete Company. He worked there for 37 years before retiring in 1989.
Leroy was an active member of the Downtown Lions Club for over 46 years. He loved to sell tickets to their annual pancake breakfast and was always one of the top salesmen for the event. Leroy enjoyed planting a large garden and sharing produce from it with friends and family who always liked to see what he was bringing them. He also loved to fish and spend time with his family. At the age of 87 he still exercised at the Jane Phillips Memorial Hospital Wellness Center three times each week at 5:30 in the morning.
Leroy and Sparky were longtime members of First United Methodist Church of Bartlesville where Leroy frequently served as an usher.
Leroy was a true gentleman and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Leroy is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sparky; a daughter, Barbara Gray of Broken Arrow; a daughter, Leann Walter and her husband Bob, of Broken Arrow; a grandson Robert Gray Walter and his wife Emily of Spring, Texas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Andy and Eula Gray, his brother Harold Gray, and two sisters, Paulyne Brodie and Sally West.
The memorial service to celebrate Leroy’s life will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church in Bartlesville, directed by Stumpff Funeral Home and Crematory.
